  • Leave copies of itinerary, passport data and visas with family or friends in case of an emergency
  • Familiarize yourself with local conditions and laws
  • To avoid risk of theft or confiscation of original documents, carry photocopies of U.S. passport, drivers license or other important documents.

Health Tips:

  • Contact your local travel clinic or doctor to get updated on vaccinations
    • Visit http://www.cdc.gov/travel for general guidance on vaccinations and other health precautions
    • Obtaining medical treatment and hospital care abroad can be expensive if your U.S. medical insurance is not accepted abroad
      • If it does not, it would be a good idea to consider purchasing a short term policy that does
      • Prices generally run about $50 per week for full coverage
    • If going abroad with a preexisting medical problem, you should carry a letter from a physician describing the medical condition and any prescriptions medications including the generic names of prescribed drugs.
    • Any medications being carried overseas should be left in their original containers and be clearly labeled.
    • If you wear eyeglasses, take an extra pair with you.
    • Pack medications and extra eyeglasses in your hand luggage so they will be available in case your checked luggage is lost.
